The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic presents us with the best – and worst – of the U.S. health care system. Courage: Powerful Lessons in Leadership, Strength, and the Will to Succeed by John Sperzel, provides a first-hand consumer’s guide to surviving our sometimes-challenging health care system. This book is more than a primer for surviving organ transplantation; it is a reminder that we are all just one pathogen or one diagnosis away from medical catastrophe. Courage underscores the need for, and the fact that, each of us must be our own health care advocate. As his own advocate, Sperzel maintained his strong will to survive and flourish; we would do well to follow his example.
