This past Friday Vice President Kamala Harris gave us a window into our COVID-19 dysfunction when she told The Los Angeles Times that the administration failed to anticipate the variants that are worsening the COVID-19 pandemic. “We didn’t see Delta coming,” Harris said, in a wide-ranging interview. “I think most scientists did not — upon whose advice and direction we have relied — didn’t see Delta coming. We didn’t see Omicron coming.”
This stunning admission of lack of foresight provides a dramatic backdrop to today’s COVID-19 speech by President Biden. We might consider ourselves in a bad sci-fi movie save for the fact that it is all real. Our War on COVID-19, waged by a country with the greatest, largest, and most expensive biomedical infrastructure in the world is besieged by one defeat after another. If all we hear from our President is that this is a “Pandemic of the Unvaccinated” and that the solution is simply to boost our way out of the problem and add 500 million free at-home tests, then we have a bigger problem than the virus; we have a total loss of direction.
