Last night’s US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement approving Moderna and Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 boosters, and the simultaneous endorsement of the mixing of vaccines with boosters from all three approved manufacturers, sets the stage for today’s meeting of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The CDC committee is expected to recommend implementation of the FDA approval. In doing so it will tacitly acknowledge that vaccines cannot stop the Covid-19 pandemic. They can however save lives by preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death for most fully-vaccinated people. The sooner the messaging in scientific and government circles adopts this reality, the better off we, and the entire globe, will be.

The stage for this was set when last week when the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) provided a rude awakening for many, with the inference that herd immunity through neutralizing antibody protection is no longer even an aspiration. If this comes as a shock, it shouldn’t. From the outset, our response to the Covid-19 pandemic has been plagued by countless administrative missteps, coupled with a host of unrealistic and unfulfillable promises, the most glaring being that, through vaccination, the virus will be vanquished or, at a minimum, reduced to the status of the seasonal flu.
