With apologies to the Sunday morning talk show commentators, any explanation for the November 2 election results other than Covid-19 must be labelled incidental. This echoes the pathology description Dr. Hannibal Lecter offered when he labelled death as merely incidental to sociopathic behavior. Once we accept that Covid-19 exhibits a similar pathology and the sooner elected officials, health care leaders, and the media at large acknowledge this, the faster we will more effectively address the pandemic realities.

Before you stop reading because you think as some of the Sunday “Talking Heads” remarked that there were many other issues of import, consider the following. Covid-19 arrived cloaked in various guises, and assumed many names, but an analysis of the issues most concerning to voters produces the true picture.

In Virginia exit polls, just 14% of voters said the pandemic was the most important issue facing the Commonwealth. That trailed concerns over the economy (33%), education (24%) and taxes (15%).

The economic concerns included job loss, business downturn (including store and business closings), supply chain disruption, limited goods and services, and overall uncertainty about recovery. Every one of these concerns stems in large part from the ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic and the inability to date to bring it under control.
